CERAMIDE – Development of a Recombinant Enzyme as an Active BioMimetic Ingredient for Dermocosmetics”
The CERAMIDE project successfully demonstrates the application of Plant Molecular Farming to the cosmeceutical sector, introducing a new production paradigm in Italy for high-value cosmetic ingredients. Using engineered plants, CeraKnight was developed and produced—a protein capable of stimulating ceramide synthesis and strengthening the skin barrier. Safety tests and clinical studies on volunteers confirmed the absence of adverse effects and demonstrated a significant improvement in skin hydration, with reduced transepidermal water loss. The project achieved TRL 6, validating the technology and paving the way for the future commercialization of the ingredient in the cosmeceutical market.
